17 year old pregnant bride to be Kerry Robertson has learning difficulties. But that’s not the only bad deal she’s had in her short life. Brought up by her grandmother because her birth parents were not capable of looking after her, she found herself pregnant at the tender age of 17. She and her boyfriend planned to marry and enjoyed preparing for their wedding, only to be told by social workers just 48 hours before the ceremony that Kerry’s learning difficulties mean that she is not clever enough to be a pregnant bride. She has been told that she is not capable of understanding what marriage means. Where were these caring social workers when someone should have been explaining sex and contraception to this vulnerable girl? Is it better to be an unmarried mother with learning difficulties than a married one? Or are these ‘well-meaning’ social workers planning to take this girl’s baby away from her? Is this the plotline for a dreary new soap? Amazingly it’s not, it’s a TRUE story of life in modern Britain …
