Best of Hawaii: Our Favorite Place to Commune with Nature

Our Best of Hawaii week continues with our favorite places to see and things to do during your Hawaii destination wedding… When it comes to Diamond Head, my favorite view isn’t from a beachfront hotel in Waikiki, it’s from up in the mountains. Way up. Some of Hawaii’s best hikes are right outside of Waikiki and when we mean right outside, we’re talking a 10 minute drive from the hustle and bustle of Kalakaua Avenue to just you, the birds and tropical forest as far as the eye can see. I love hiking and I don’t nearly get out and enjoy Hawaii enough as I should- I gues when you’re born and raised in the same place for years, you just don’t see the beauty you’re surrounded by the way an outsider does. Shame on me. This past weekend I rediscovered the beauty of Oahu with a Sunday morning hike up Wa’ahila Ridge, about 10 minutes from Waikiki. Just to give you an idea of how close this is, here’s an image from Waikiki looking up towards the Ko’olau Mountains- Wa’ahila ridge to the left and Maunalani Heights to the right… (photo by Kaleo ) (photo by bigkgbguy ) A group hike is the perfect way to get your bridesmaids, groomsmen, friends and family out for the day and, best thing of all, it’s free! Take St. Louis Heights drive up to the top at Wa’ahila Ridge State Park and after mere minutes of venturing through dense forest like this, you’l emerge with beautiful views of Honolulu below… (photo by mash.ALOHA ) Along the way there are several grassy areas perfect for a picnic… Speaking of which, picking up ahi salad, papaya curry and bread pudding from Diamond Head …
